THE ELEPHANT CAMP

CHANG | Maesa Elephant Camp

Yes, this page is dedicated to Chang, the elephants. After all, we are in Northern Thailand and have to be tourists for at least half a day. Chang, is also one of the largest beer companies here and we will see this logo just about anywhere- the side of the roads, bottles, football (soccer) jerseys. The night before, Da En (5) was so excited to ride the elephants he couldn’t wait! Once we got up close to the elephant, however, he ran away screaming. So much for riding one. (But his mom is also pretty scared of them too).

Jia Mei tells us that the people who works at the elephant farms aren’t Thai, but Burmese. She says that most Thai people don’t want to do this line of work. The men here train the elephants while the wives/women feed them and clean up their poop.

Getting kissed by an elephant is like having a huge suction cup on your face. DSC_0266

So many foreigners! At these tourist spots, there will likely be few, if any, Thai people in sight. That day there were people from Australia, France, Germany, and China just to name a few.

My favorite part about watching the elephants was seeing how they are as big of jokesters as they are brilliant. Also, their painting skills far surpass my own, even for just a tree. Art is just not my gift in life.
