New Year Reflections on Studying Abroad

As someone who is awful at keeping up with social media and updating others, I have made one of my New Years Goals to be consistent about filling this blog with random anecdotes and observations of the rest of my time here (1 more “semester”-or Lent and Summer Term).

It’s hard to believe that 2016 is already here, and with only a few months left in London, I’m feeling the urgency of wanting to do the many things I had set out to accomplish but had put it aside. Procrastination at its finest.

FAQs

  1. Have you picked up a British accent yet? No, and it probably will not happen since I am living in central London/Westminster with no British flatmates. Many of the people who work in the stores, restaurants, etc. around the area are also from foreign countries. I may not have the Londoner accent, but there are certain words that I’ve been using more frequently: cheers (which does need the lighter Brit touch not the American EER-SUH), lovely, quite- and to be honest, I love how much they use “brilliant.”
  2. How’s the food? Is it terrible? Before I came to London, I really couldn’t answer this. The extent of my knowledge was the classic fish and chips and other tasty not very extravagant foods. Being in such a metropolitan city, you can find just about any cuisine- from Mediterranean, Southeast Asian,  to African. Now, as I explain to people- some of the average British foods are (as I understand it): roasts (beef), potatoes (mash/chips), mushy peas, and always smothered in gravy- usually the meat pies. Of course, going out means having the ale to go along with it. Confession: I have not yet gone out for a traditional Sunday Roast yet! That will happen this year.
  3. Do you miss home? Being that this is the longest (5 months so far) I’ve been away from home, of course I miss the comforts of my mom’s home cooking, watching sports and movies with my family, and my friends. Still, I know that this is all temporary, and I am soaking (literally) up as much of this city life and abroad experience as I can! Who knows the next time I’d be able to take weekend trips to another European country so easily?
